Why our world looks like layered cut paper

spooky froot studios blog post paper world

Visit our website and you will notice everything looks like it has been cut from layered paper: curtains, trees, clouds, ghosts and all. That is no accident. It is the visual language of Spooky Froot Studios, and here is why we love it.

Layers make depth

A cut-paper style is built from flat shapes stacked in layers, each casting a soft shadow on the one behind. That gives a scene real depth without ever losing its handmade charm, and it lets us move layers at different speeds as you scroll, so the world feels like a tiny paper theatre.

Spooky, but friendly

Paper shapes are gentle. A ghost cut from cream paper is far more cuddly than a photorealistic one, which suits our tone: we like things a little spooky and strange, but always inviting. It is the same balance you will find across our games.

One look, everywhere

You will see the same style in our characters, our props and our logo. Keeping one consistent look makes everything feel like it comes from the same orchard, whether you are reading a news post or looking at the key art for After Hours: Between Nightmares.

If you enjoy the look, tell us. We are always happy to talk art, and you can get in touch any time.

Our cast

Paper is the stage; the cast is what makes it ours. There are ghosts with a range of moods, from sneaky to scared to dizzy, an apple mascot, a crow with opinions and fruit that changes when you are not looking. Each one has to work as a flat shape first, then earn its personality.

Two moods: Parchment and Midnight

The site has two looks. Parchment is warm paper by daylight. Midnight is the same theatre after dark, with a glowing moon and a deeper sky. You can switch between them with the little sun and moon button, and the site will remember your choice.

Why not something realistic?

Realistic art asks you to judge it. Cut paper invites you in. It gives our spooky ideas a soft edge, which is how we like them.
