Spooky, strange and a little bit sweet: our approach to horror-tinged games

People sometimes ask what kind of studio Spooky Froot is. Our honest answer: one that likes the dark, but never forgets to leave a light on.

Atmosphere first

The scariest moments in a game are usually the quiet ones, so we care a lot about mood: how a scene looks, sounds and slowly builds. It is the thread that connects a narrative horror game like After Hours: Between Nightmares with the frantic energy of Red Blood Rush.

Strange ideas welcome

Racing through the human body as a tiny pilot is a strange idea. So is a story that follows you home from a nightmare. As an independent studio we get to chase ideas like these and see where they lead, and we would rather make something unusual than something familiar.

A little bit sweet

Not everything has to be grim to be spooky. We love ghosts with personality, fruit with feelings and worlds that make you smile even when they make you jump. Call it cosy horror, call it spooky fun. We just call it Spooky Froot.

Made in the UK, made independently

We are a small UK team making games for players everywhere. If that sounds like your kind of thing, follow along: subscribe on the homepage for release news, or browse our games to see what is coming.

Cosy horror, explained

Cosy horror is what happens when the spooky bits are wrapped in something warm: gentle art, friendly characters, a sense of humour. The fear is real, but so is the comfort. It is a mood we keep coming back to, even when a game leans darker.

Three things we try to do in every game

  • Give every world a strong sense of place.
  • Let players discover things rather than only being told them.
  • Leave a little room for wonder, even in the dark.
